What is Opera in the Country?

“Opera in the Country’s mission is to perform opera for people who have a lack of access to the artform financially and geographically.”

- Opera in the Country creator, Charlotte Goode

Started by Kyabram “born and bred” Charlotte Goode, Opera in the Country came about after she moved to Melbourne and realised just how different the arts scene was in rural areas compared to metropolitan and regional centres.

Opera in the Country seeks to invite new audiences to the art form by performing concerts in rural towns that prioritise classic and approachable repertoire.

Celebrating

Town halls

Opera in the Country values celebrating beautiful and often under-utilised town halls. Town halls are often the heart and soul of many rural communities, and performing opera in these spaces allows them to be wholly appreciated. After each concert a free supper is held, offering the community a chance to relax and be in each other’s company.

About the Creator

Charlotte Goode has trained and performed in Melbourne and other cities, but brings a country girl perspective to every part of her work, by prioritising performances that feel intimate and invite audiences to simply sit and enjoy music in each other’s company.

Living in rural areas can often feel isolating for some, and sharing food and a conversation after each performance is a core value of Opera in the Country, recognising the value in supporting small communities.
